After today's massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Chile, it triggered a tsunami which caused Hawaii to prepare for the worst. The tsunami was scheduled to arrive close to 4:30PM EST bringing high-speed dangerous waves to the coast. Many who aren't on the island are now wondering has the tsunami hit Hawaii? According to various news reports, the tsunami has come and gone. Luckily, Hawaii has "dodged a bullet" according to geophysicist Gerald Fryer of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, but the island erred on the side of caution using the age old advice of "better safe than sorry". Live coverage of the Hawaii tsunami has been going on all day via news reports online or on TV coverage. Also, live Hawaii beach cams have been a popular source for people to view what the island looks like during this impending hazardous weather.
The Honolulu.gov site which is the official website of the city and county of Honolulu offers several web cameras for internet viewers including Honolulu traffic cams as well as hot spot traffic cameras showing areas of traffic congestion from Honolulu Traffic Control Center. Two of the more popular web cams have been the Kuhio Beach Live camera in Waikiki and the Waikiki Beach live camera which is situated in front of the Duke Kahanamoku statue. Both cams have been flooded with web traffic making them tough to catch a glimpse of live action on. You can see the honolulu.gov's web cams available here. There's a variety of live cams available on a site called Ustream as well, including this one which is a live beachfront cam for surf conditions near Tiki's Bar and Grill.
The waves that arrived in surges to Hawaii's coast of Hilo around noon local time were much smaller than initially predicted, with the highest wave measuring about 6 feet. Live coverage of Hawaii tsunami via live Hawaii beach cam has allowed many to see that there was not the original danger expected. While there was no initial damage, there was still plenty of reason to take cautionary measures as the waves were scheduled to continue through the afternoon. California, Oregon and Washington also experienced some tidal surges but no major damage beyond wiping out some navigational buoys.
Now that many with friends and family on the island have learned the answer to their pressing question "has the tsunami hit Hawaii yet?", they can rest much easier knowing that it wasn't nearly as bad as originally expected. In the past, tsunamis have hit with little time to prepare. In this potentially severe weather situation, evacuations and other precautionary methods were taken with plenty of time ahead of the impending problem.
